Rylan studied the ceiling of his dorm with mild interest, trying to create patterns out of the dull, milky white color. It wasn't working. An obvious, heavy sigh escape his lips as he turned his head to steal a glance at his alarm clock. 11:08 pm. Late, but much to early to even consider going to sleep. Not to mention Rylan had very stupidly drank a Starbucks coffee before heading back to his dorm. With that amount of caffeine in his system, sleep felt as far away as the north pole. Rylan's hands were folded across his chest as he twiddled his thumbs, his ankles crossed as he lay sprawled on his bed. The silence seemed deafening and he had an overwhelming urge to run and jump and scream and basically just make as much noise as humanly possibly. He had to pass on that idea, though. Last time, he had been reported by one of his neighbors in the dorm across the hall. Stupid tattletale.
Rylan finally couldn't sit still any longer. He struggled into a sitting position before rolling off his bed. He kneeled on the floor and looked under his bed, rummaging through the mess before pulling out one limegreen high top converse sneaker and finding the other one in minutes. He fell back onto his behind and quickly pulled them on, tying the laces in a very sloppy manner. He needed to get out of this room before the walls drove him crazy. He stumbled to the other side of his room, tripping over another pair of shoes and a pile of clothes. He threw open his closet foor and pulled out his blue Ninja Turtle zip up sweatshirt and put it on. He zipped it up halfway before pulling the hood over his head. He glanced down at his black, tight skinny jeans and decided he was too lazy to change into clean pants. Besides, who was going to see him out? Most likely, everyone else was sound asleep in their dorm rooms.
Rylan grabbed his cellphone and dorm key, shoving both into his pocket before opening the door and slipping outside. He shut the door silently behind him, even more aware of how quiet it was. It was a little creepy. He was always used to the corridor being loud and noisy, packed with students. Of course, right now it was empty. He headed towards the stairs, starting down them. He jumped the last three steps, landing with a loud 'thud' before pushing open the door that led outside. He rushed out into the night air and immediately, a wave of cool air hit him. He took a deep breath, a tiny smile tugging at the corners of his lips. Finally...freedom and fresh air. Without so much as a backwards glance at the building, Rylan headed off down the sidewalk. He had a general idea of where he was going and if he got lost, oh well. Maybe that would be more fun. Everything looked different in the dark. Much different than it did in the light. He shivered slightly and pulled his sweatshirt tighter around him.
He hadn't been walking for more than fifteen minutes when he remembered the park coming up. It seemed like a good place to waste his time. He changed directions and trampled over the smooth green grass as he moved towards the metal swingset. He dropped down onto one of the empty ones, wrapping his hands around the metal chains. He swung slowly back and forth, his sneakers dragging through the dirt beneath his swing. He hummed a song he had stuck in his head, extremely pleased that he was no longer stuck in his dorm. Now only if this park wasn't so creepy...then he would be having just a grand, old time.
