Ailment #o1. Doctors live in the hospital.
Hours and hours spent in the hospital, their careers practically taking over
their lives, the West Oakland General Hospital employees are always on standby 24/7.
Even on their off-days, their pagers are by their side at all times. When a disaster
strikes, they might as well forget about going home to sleep.
Ailment #o2. Doctors distant themselves from otherss.
Having spent all their time in the hospital slogging their guts out (sometimes
literally), all they say to their colleagues are diagnoses of their patients. In fact, they
talk so litle that you wouldn't know if your resident surgeon is a married woman or not,
even if you scrub in with her every day.
Ailment #o3. Doctors have commitment issues.
70% of West Oakland General Hospital employees who are committed in a
relationship before joining the hospital are unable to keep the relationship. The other
30% formed relationships within the hospital.
Ailment #o4. Doctors have no social lives.
The only time where they even get to talk to each other is the occasional odd
drink at the nearby pub. And even such events occur, both parties become drunk and
end up in bed together, only to regret it the following morning.
Ailment #o5. They need a new Chief.
And any animosity between each other might just escalate. With the Chief
Surgeon due to retire in month, the attendings are all trying their best to outdo each
other. For once, they are actually making effort to get to know the other employees
working with them. Why?
I'd like to know the reason too.
